How to Jailbreak iOS 5.1 using RedSn0w (tethered)

In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak iOS 5.1 by using RedSn0w.

Devices which runs on A4 chip or older can still enjoy this benifit by doing tethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1 and also can degrade back to earlier firmware if you SHSH for those firmware. Whereas, for devices which runs on the A5 chip like iPhone 4s and iPad 2, its not possible to degrade back to older, iOS 5.x firmware even if you have SHSH stored. So don't upgrade to iOS 5.1 if you care about your jailbroken iPhone 4s.

Supported devices

  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 3GS
  • Original iPad
  • iPod touch

Here are some important points to noted before you proceed :
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
  • This guide is only meant for windows user.
  • Do not forget to backup your iDevice before you proceed.
  • Before we start, make sure to disable the passcode lock if you have one on your device by going into settings > General > Passcode lock. You may turn lock back again as soon as the jailbreak is complete.

1) Download Greenpois0n zip file and extract the file and launch the application.

2) Connect your iPhone to your computer and power it off.

3) Keep your A4 device on DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode.

4) Once RedSn0w gets executed click on jailbreak, it will start scanning and a pop up will appear asking you to jailbreak and install Cydia. Click on Jailbreak option and click next.

5) As mentioned above, Don't try it on device which runs on A5 chip. Click Next.

6) Installation of cydia will start and once done it will take you to the Home screen wherein you'll find cydia App installed and the icon in white block which shows that the installation is yet to complete. So to complete the installation successfully we need to do a tethered reboot.

7) Get your iPhone back into DFU mode.

8) Run the RedSn0w and you'll find a screen similar to the image below, just click on 'Just boot' and then the device will start tethered rebooting. At the end it will take you to home screen, now you can see the Cydia icon displayed properly which shows that the installation is complete so is the Jailbreaking process.

9) That's it, your iPhone is successfully Jailbroken.
