After Orkut , Google Code makes way

Google just announced that it will be shutting its Google Code Project Hosting. That was a very sad move indeed. It was first in a kind of website which allowed free hosting of open source codes related to all programming languages. A decade ago it was a Facebook environment for the budding developers. Programmers helped others and a beautiful sharing community was created. As every story has a sad part, this also has one. Github entered the market and started hitting good milestones. Many developers tried shifting there because of its high class features and very responsive comments. It was a project hosting site but very different and better. Another reasons for closing the site were that the number of spammers and abuse had increased in last few years. This translated into memory wasting and unnecessarily loading Google's servers. It created bad impression and new developers had problems finding legit codes.

Google in its post on Open Source Blog accepted that time is changing and they still target to provide a trustworthy hosting site. They claimed that Github has serviced its customers better than them and Google has gradually shifted its open source projects to get noticed. Creation of new codes and projects has been disabled by now. Tools such as Google Code to Github Exporter are being provided to help a smoother transition. Support for migration will be available for next three months. They have planned to make the site read only by August 24. Google has decided January 2016 as the final date for shutdown of Google Code.
