Youtube, which is the world's largest video viewing website in the world has made a great move by allowing the creators to upload and audience to view the videos in 360-Degree format. This feature will allow the users of VR headset to upload their videos easily and its a first for any video sharing website in the world.
Youtube had announced back in January that in "coming weeks" it would allow the support for the 360-Degree viewing and made it available yesterday for a small amount of videos but as the number of userd for 360-Degree cameras will increase, the number of videos will also increase.
According to Youtube, this feature will be available in the Android app, the Youtube website and embedded videos on Chrome. This feature is not yet available in iOS devices but it may be available in the future.
If you want a watch a 360-Degree video on your Smartphone you will have to tilt your phone to adjust the point of view and to view a 360-Degree video on Desktop, you will have to drag the mouse to watch the video from other angles.
Google has said that Kickstarter phenom Giroptic and its 360cam, Bublcam and Ricoh's Theta are currently supporting this feature. Google also said that efforts are being made for videos shot on IC Real Tech’s Allie and Kodak’s SP360 to work smoothly. Currently, Videos that are shot on all these cameras will have to go through a special upload process, though YouTube says it's working on its uploader so that 360-degree video will be identified automatically.
The whole process is not seamless currently and the technical requirements are available on GitHub as well as the Youtube Creators Blog but yes, this is a good step towards the immersive video experience and kudos to Google for this.
